April 14 - 2009:College of Liberal Arts professor awarded fellowship for book project in Japan

Hoi-eun Kim, Asst. Professor of History, in the College of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M University was awarded a Japan Society for the Promotion of Sciences (JSPS) Fellowship for a 16-month research stay in Japan.

The JSPS is an independent administrative institution of the Japanese government, established by way of national law for the purpose of contributing to the advancement of science in all fields of the natural and social sciences and humanities. In the U.S., the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) recommends up to 20 candidates annually from the social sciences and humanities. The fellowship program gives recent Ph.D. graduates opportunities to conduct studies under the guidance of a host researcher and to collaborate amongst Japanese academic circles.

Kim will continue work on his book manuscript, “Physicians on the Move: Medical and Cultural Encounters between Imperial Germany and Meiji Japan,” which will examine the medical and cultural connections between Japan and Germany during the period of 1868-1914.

Kim earned his B.A., summa cum laude, from Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea; and his Ph.D. from Harvard University. His previous work has been published in an edited volume, Germany and the Imagined East.
