China Certificate

Graduate Certificate In China Studies

The economic, political, and social significance of the People’s Republic of China has grown substantially in recent years.  This growth has had momentous consequences in any number of fields including business and trade, international politics, and scientific research. At the same time, Texas A&M has multiple academic and professional graduate programs whose graduates will most certainly be called upon in their future careers to engage China and its commercial, political, and cultural institutions in a professional context. The graduate Certificate in China Studies is designed to allow graduate students at Texas A&M to take a core set of courses that will help them to prepare for a global future.

This transcripted certificate offers masters or doctoral students with a significant interest in the history, politics, language, or other area the opportunity to acquire in-depth understanding of contemporary Chinese society and its increasing involvement in world affairs.  The China Studies Graduate Certificate provides a comprehensive introduction to Chinese history, society, economics, foreign and security policy, as well as the opportunity to learn more about the philosophical, cultural, and linguistic roots of that society. The certificate provides students with the skills, applied and theoretical, that are necessary to understand the role of China and Chinese institutions in a variety of professional and academic contexts. The certificate program is open to students from any graduate degree program at Texas A&M University and the plan of study comprises 12 credit hours of coursework. At least two courses must be outside the student’s home department.

Completion of the Certificate does not require the study of Mandarin Chinese language. No graduate credit can be given for basic language instruction, however, a special notation will be made on the transcript of any student who completes two semesters of regularly offered course work in Chinese.
