The US-India Nuclear Accord

Implications for scientific research, education, diplomacy, and global politics

 October 2, 2007, 1 - 3 PM , MSC 224

The Institute for Pacific Asia, the Friends of India Network, and the George Bush School of Government and Public Service are co-sponsoring a seminar entitled "The US-India Nuclear Accord: Implications for scientific research, education, diplomacy, and global politics," on October 2, from 1-3 pm at MSC 224. Attached is a flyer with the program details and speakers.

This seminar will feature speakers focusing on the implications of the recent US-India accord on nuclear cooperation, including discussion of the ramifications and potential long term consequences of the deal from a variety of angles, such as scientific research, global politics, and the future of both nuclear energy and nuclear arms proliferation. While the deal provides hope that nuclear technology could bolster India's economy and help to raise the quality of life, critics argue that the deal could also break the international non-proliferation treaty. While both countries are committed to transforming India into a "major world power in the 21st century," and to bolster India's research and economic capacity, there remains a question as to whether this accord endangers other long standing agreements within global politics, particularly the acceptance of nonproliferation norms.
