International Relations

Overview:One of the characteristics which makes Texas A&M University unique is its firm dedication to public service.  Since its inception, Texas A&M has produced countless students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to serving others within their ranks, as well as throughout their community, state, nation and world.  Texas A&M University's Vision 2020 plan includes as a goal to "attain the highest rate of student participation in volunteer service activities in a national research university."  The Institute for Pacific Asia seeks to help Texas A&M extend its public service mission throughout the Asian region by fostering positive, mutually beneficial international relationships.  These efforts often extend beyond the realm of the University to include key leaders from both the United States and other Asian countries.

Selected Projects:

China-U.S. Conference:On November 14-17, 2005, the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Texas A&M University, the George Bush School of Government and Public Service, and the George Bush Presidential Library Foundation hosted an international conference in Beijing focused on China-U.S. relations.  The conference provided an opportunity for policymakers, scholars, and business leaders from both China and the United States to exchange ideas and address issues of common interest.  Conference participants from around the world contributed to discussions on collaborative research opportunities in various strategic areas.  Some of these discussions began during the 2003 conference hosted at Texas A&M University.  About 400 scholars, business leaders, and interested citizens attended these sessions.  Individuals on both sides are actively following up on the ideas generated or advanced during these sessions.  Texas A&M University is working on formal mechanisms for accelerating research and scholarly activities between China and the United States.

Plans are already underway for the 2007 China-U.S. Relations Conference, to be held in Washington D.C. in October.  Please visit the China-U.S. Conference website for the most up-to-date information.
